April 4  U.S. forces Friday occupied most of Saddam International Airport  about 10 miles southwest of central Baghdad, inflicting heavy Iraqi casualties on troops that put up little resistance, the military said. As the battle for control of Baghdad itself neared, an Iraqi military official vowed that the country’s military would “swallow whole†U.S. forces entering the city.
